Reports have emerged in recent days linking Matthijs de Ligt with a switch to Manchester United. The Dutch starlet has been expected to join Barcelona in recent months. Although recent news suggests his move to Barcelona has been put on hold due to his high wage demands.
What’s the Story?
Many various reports in the last couple of days have linked Manchester United with a swoop for Matthijs de Ligt. Ajax captain has been expected to join Barcelona after Frenkie de Jong completed his move to Camp Nou.
Reports on Saturday had suggested, Manchester United has made a bid of around £70m and are ready to offer wage around £350k-per-week. Although reports from Sky Sports on Sunday says Manchester United has withdrawn their interest in the Dutch centre-back.
Heart of the Matter
Mino Raiola represents the 19-year-old and it is being believed he is using United’s interest to get a better result for his client.
Reports from Sky confirms United have no interest in pursuing de Ligt’s signing. He is very likely to join Barcelona. Pep Guardiola had hinted in his post-match interview after winning FA Cup that de Ligt is Barcelona bound.
On Saturday, Barça president Josep Maria Bartomeu said,
“Every year new players come in. So far we have confirmed De Jong’s signing and now we will work on bringing in others and moving players on, as is normal every summer,” Bartomeu said.
“Now is not the moment to do anything. There are always new signings, but now is not the moment to talk about it.”
Matthijs de Ligt
Ajax captain had a great 2018-19 season. At the age of 19 he lead his team to domestic double and UEFA Champions League semi-final. Despite his young age he is regarded as one of the best centre-backs in the world right now.
The Dutch centre-back played 54 games in the 2018-19 and had an average rating of 7.26. He averaged 1.1 tackles, 1.2 interceptions and 4 clearances per game. He also contributed with 7 goals and 1 assist, two of those came against Juventus and Tottenham.
Manchester United can be confidently ruled out from signing Matthijs de Ligt this summer. Barcelona are favourites to sign him but they are not the only team chasing him. Liverpool, Juventus and Bayern Munich are all believed to be highly interested in him.
