Maguire had a great World Cup 2018 in Russia and has been good for Leicester in the Premier League 2018-19. A great 2018-19 season has increased his demand in Manchester.
What’s the Story?
Manchester City’s captain Vincent Kompany has announced he will be leaving the club this summer. His departure and reports that Otamendi can be sold this summer, will leave Man City short of players at centre-back. Harry Maguire has been reported to be Manchester City’s number one target to solve their centre-back issues.
Manchester United, on the other hand, have Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly as their number one target. However, reports have emerged that their bid in access of $100m has been rejected by the Italians. Maguire is believed to be United’s second choice if they fail to sign Koulibaly this summer.
Maguire joined Leicester in the summer of 2017 from Hull City. Hull City suffered relegation in the 2016-17 season from the Premier League. Maguire was one of the bright stars of Hull’s poor Premier League campaign that season. He made 29 appearances averaging 1.9 tackles, 2.2 interceptions and 4.9 clearances that season. He had an average rating of 7.07, quite good for a relegated team’s centre-half.
In 2018-19 season, Maguire made 43 appearances for both club and country. He had an average rating of 7.03. Maguire averaged 1 tackle, 1 interception and 4.6 clearances per game. He also chipped in with 4 goals and a solo assist. His aerial ability makes him a dangerous player in both defence and attack. He averages 4 aerials won per game.
He maybe wanted by both the Manchester clubs but City definitely are favourites for his signature. They can offer him Champions League football that United can’t.
It will be interesting to see how much Leicester will accept for their prized asset. Leicester valued Maguire at £60m last summer and reportedly want £80m for him this summer.
