Liverpool managed to win late at Newcastle to keep their title hopes alive. Digging a late 3-2 win will be a huge boost for Liverpool going into the final week of the season. Virgil van Dijk was brilliant for Liverpool last night and Atsu for Newcastle. Here are the player ratings for the Newcastle vs Liverpool game.
Dubravka (GK) – 5
Couldn’t have done much for any of the goals he conceded. Must feel let down by his defence. He just made one save and won no aerial balls according to WhoScored.com stats.
Manquillo (RB) – 6
He had a solid game considering who he was up against, Mane. Provided an attacking outlet at right and made a couple of good tackles against his former club. He even had two dribbles and one shot. Got one assist as well.
Schar (CB) – 5
Made an important tackle against Mane in the first half. Also got a yellow card. Substituted late to give Newcastle more attacking threat.
Lascelles (CB) – 5
If someone should be faulted for the first goal, it should be him. Let van Dijk run behind him and then slipped to give him a free header. Otherwise best Newcastle defender with a pass success rate of 81%.
Dummett (CB) – 5.5
Should have done better for the Salah goal. Won four aerials, one of which could have cost them a goal.
Richie (LB) – 6.5
Provided a regular attacking outlet from the left. Had 4 key passes, 2 shots and was involved in Newcastle’s first goal. But Salah kept him on his heels going forward.
Perez (RM) – 5
Was Newcastle’s most dispossessed player, three times. Had a hard time going against van Dijk. Hit the woodwork with a great attempt.
Hayden (CM) – 6
Had a tough job in midfield but did it well. Pass success rate of 86%, 4 tackles won (100%) and 2 interceptions.
Sung-yueng (CM) – 5.5
Struggled against Liverpool’s midfield. Had one shot on target and was decent in possession.
Atsu (LM) – 7
Newcastle’s best-attacking player on the field. Made Arnold work hard on his wing. Good finish for the first goal. Made 3 key passes.
Rondon (CF) – 7
Beautiful finish for his goal and battled hard. Won 8 aerials and was a nuisance in the air for both Lovren and van Dijk.
Muto (CF) – Late Sub
Alisson (GK) – 6
Couldn’t have done much for either of the two goals. Made some good saves. Won 2 aerials.
Alexander-Arnold (RB) – 6.5
Atsu made him work hard defensively. Curled a beautiful ball in for Salah’s goal. Made a couple of key passes as well.
Lovren (CB) – 6
Had a good battle against Rondon aerially. A couple of poor passes and doesn’t look in his rhythm.
van Dijk (CB) – 7
Scored a great header with so much space available. Won 10 aerials, had five clearances and 1 tackle. By the way, it was his idea to let Shaqiri take the free-kick from which Origi scored.
Robertson (LB) – 6.5
A usual great attacking outlet for Liverpool on the left. Pressed extremely well and kept Perez quiet on his flank.
Henderson (CM) – 6
Had a decent game and kept possession well. 90% pass success rate, 1 key pass and 3 successful tackles.
Fabinho (DM) – 6
Not one of his best games but gave his all. 3 tackles won and 3 aerials. Provided a necessary shield on counter-attacks.
Wijnaldum (CM) – 5.5
Has gone out of form lately. Did kept the possession well but sometimes took too long to choose his next pass. Substituted for Shaqiri.
Salah (RW) – 7
A nice finish to score his goal. He was Liverpool’s best attacking option before being substituted off due to injury.
Sturridge (CF) – 5
A poor game from the striker. Was dispossessed most number of times among Liverpool players, three. Positioning wasn’t great either in offensive situations.
Mane (LW) – 6
Had an off game. Although had nice runs behind the defence. But couldn’t spark anything special.
Shaqiri (RW) – 6
Great cross for the late goal after coming on for Wijnaldum.
Origi (CF) – 6
Scored the winner. Was poor in possession.
Milner (CM) – Late sub
The win puts pressure on Manchester City who will be facing Leicester on Monday night.
