Mumbai Indians are the most esteemed team in IPL History. Many of the biggest names in the cricketing world have been part of this franchise. Mumbai Indians have had associations with legends like Ricky Ponting, Sachin Tendulkar, Lasith Malinga, Sanath Jayasuriya, Mahela Jayawardene, Shaun Pollock, Jonty Rhodes and list goes on. It is the most successful franchise in the IPL along with CSK, both teams have won the title three times. MI was recently valued at $106m. They are the first IPL team to be valued above $100m.
MI is part of the IPL since it’s inception. It had failed miserably during the early years of the IPL(2008,2009). In 2010 they came back strong and made it to the finals, after losing the title to Chennai Super Kings. For the next two years(2011,2012), they made it to the playoffs but couldn’t make it to the finals. In the 2013 season, they won the IPL title for the first time under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma. This emerging win-loss pattern is weird and got stronger in the coming years as they crashed in the playoffs in 2014,2016 and won the title on both the other occasions 2015,2017.
Last year they came as defending champions but failed miserably, losing first four out of five matches they played and finishing at the fifth spot in the league table.
Mumbai had a very busy IPL auction, they made 6 additions to the team. Barinder Singh Sran(₹ 3.4 Cr), Lasith Malinga(₹2 Cr), Yuvraj Singh(₹1 Cr), Anmolpreet Singh(₹80 L), Pankaj Jaiswal(₹20 L), Rasikh Dar(₹20 L).
Stats IPL 2018

Highest Wicket Taker – Hardik Pandya (18 wickets)
Highest Total – 213/6 vs RCB in Mumbai
Lowest Total – 87/10 vs SRH in Mumbai
Batting has been always the point of concentration for MI. This year will not be different from others. They have Evin Lewis, who is a West Indian opener and a powerful hitter of the bowl, then comes Quinton de Kock who is an experienced wicketkeeper and an explosive batsman. In the middle-order comes Rohit, Yadav, Pollard, Cutting. Hardik and Krunal Pandya in the lower middle order gives a strength to the overall batting line-up of Mumbai Indians.
They have the best death bowler in the world. Jasprit Bumrah with his deadly yorkers and clever change of pace is the toughest bowler to tackle in the death overs. Spin departments of Mumbai Indian is quite strong as well, with the Indian duo of Mayank Markande and Krunal Pandya.
Pollard has been an integral part of the MI team for many years. He provides them heavy hitting in the death overs and can be used as an extra bowler as well. He is struggling with his form for a while and can be a point of concern for MI.
Mumbai Indians have limited options for turning tracks with experience. Mayank Markande and Krunal Pandya are the only spin bowlers with some experience. If either of them gets injured, the backup of Rahul Chahar and Ankul Roy is very inexperienced.
They have got quite a strong team and can contend the title. Yuvraj Singh will never get a better platform than this to perform. Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan are looking in good touch. If MI get the right combination, then they can be an unstoppable force.
Players themselves are the biggest threat to the team’s success. Mostly MI play with the best team in IPL, comprising of superstars from all over the world, but couldn’t find success due to inconsistency in their performance. Poor form of many of it’s star players was the main reason for last year’s early exit. The lack of experience on the bench is the other threat to the team.
What to expect?
Mumbai Indians have possibly the best opening duo in this season’s IPL, Lewis and DeKock. With middle-order hitters like Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan, some good scores can be expected from the team. Chasing can be their strong point specially considering their lower middle-orders has Pandya brothers, who have got enough experience to finish the game. This year’s Mumbai Indians squad looks well balanced compare to two previous years and you can certainly expect a title charge from Rohit’s boys.
